That's exactly what Swiss furniture maker Willi Fehlbaum thought in 1953 when, on a trip to New York, he encountered the designs of Charles and Ray Eames – a legendary designer couple from California. Fehlbaum, then the owner of a small shopfitting business in Birsfelden near Basel, was immediately fascinated. That same year, he acquired the distribution rights for Eames furniture in Europe, thus founding the company Vitra .
Today, 70 years later, Vitra is a third-generation family business – and has long been more than just a furniture manufacturer. The headquarters in Weil am Rhein, southern Germany, is home to the so-called "Vitra Campus": a unique place that attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors every year with its workshops, architectural highlights, and the renowned Vitra Design Museum.
This is also where the timeless classics that you are sure to know are created: first and foremost the legendary Eames Lounge Chair , which we carry at Revive in selected, lovingly restored originals.
Vitra's furniture shares one common characteristic: it was designed to last for generations. The latest sustainability report demonstrates that sustainability is far more than just an afterthought: By 2030, Vitra aims to be completely climate-neutral, to accompany every design from start to finish, and to create absolute transparency regarding materials and production processes.
This attitude connects us particularly with Vitra. Just like Revive, Vitra consistently pursues the goal of using high-quality furniture for as long as possible and sensibly returning it to the cycle. In Vitra Circle stores, used furniture is refurbished, repaired, and resold – with up to 90% less CO₂ compared to the production of new products. We are delighted by such a forward-thinking approach!
