The perfect rug
Perhaps you've already noticed, but we recently introduced a new category for home furnishings: Rugs! I'm personally very excited about this, as I believe rugs are one of the most underrated pieces of furniture.
A high-quality rug can easily last for decades (or even centuries). The best proof of this is the famous Pazyryk carpet, an excavation piece approximately 2,500 years old. Aside from a few holes, it could still visually grace a living room today. This also shows that rugs have always played an important role in home décor. For me, they are not just an accessory, but a full-fledged piece of furniture. They define spatial zones, connect other furniture, and create coziness. Many rooms simply don't feel complete without a rug.
The rugs we offer at Revive are, of course, not quite as old, and I promise you, they don't have any holes either. They are professionally cleaned and reconditioned in our facility to be ready for their second life. I'd like to give you a few tips for choosing the right rug:
The most important and golden rule is: Choose an appropriate size; when in doubt, larger is better than smaller. Most people tend to buy a rug that's too small! This immediately makes the entire room appear smaller. Let's look at the living room: here, all furniture in your seating area should have at least its front legs or even completely rest on the rug. As a small guide:
- Small living room: approx. 160 x 200 cm
- Medium living room: approx. 200 x 300 cm
- Large living room: 300 x 400 cm and more
Generally, a rug should not butt directly against the wall, as this makes it look cramped. Maintain a distance of about 20 to 45 cm from the wall. An exception is a corner sofa placed in a room corner. Here, it works best if your sofa rests entirely on the rug.
For the bedroom, the typical bedside runner (a small rug placed narrowly in front of the bed) is rather less elegant. It looks much more complete if the rug is slid broadly under the bed. It looks truly luxurious if it's so large that it extends far out from under the bed on the sides.
Each room places different demands on materials due to our habits. This should definitely be considered when buying a rug. For example, in the hallway: there's a lot of movement here, often with shoes, dirt, and moisture. Flat-woven or short-pile rugs are generally well-suited here. The more robust and flatter, the longer you'll enjoy it. The same applies to households with pets or children. Rugs made of polyester or synthetic fibers are usually easier to vacuum and clean than natural fibers. Bonus tip: patterns and mottled colors are more forgiving of small stains.
In the living and sleeping areas, however, it can also be cozier: high-pile, shaggy, or frisé rugs provide a pleasant feel underfoot with long, soft fibers, bring warmth into the room, and wonderfully reduce ambient noise.
Wool rugs are a wonderful middle ground. They naturally possess dirt-repellent properties and age very well, which is why I consider them among the most durable solutions. If you prefer a shinier and more modern look, opt for viscose. However, a viscose rug is a bit more sensitive and should therefore be placed away from hallways and dining rooms.
In short: a good rug can completely change your perception of a room. Take a look at our newly arrived rugs; perhaps there's something for your home!
