From the Egyptian Palace to the Viennese Coffee House
The chair has the same origins as the armchair, whose story I've already told you: From the ancient pharaoh, its exclusive path led via the medieval imperial throne to the villas of the upper middle class. Until then, the average person tended to use stools, benches, and similar uncomfortable alternatives. But with industrialization, everything changed! The legendary Thonet No. 14 brought the chair into coffee houses for the first time—and to people millions of times over. This ingenious design—light, robust, and collapsible—has shaped sitting to this day, making it dramatically more social and accessible . Incidentally, you can currently find a very similar model in our range: No. 207 !
For me, the best thing about our selected range of chairs is that designer furniture doesn't just exist in an ivory tower. The Thonet No. 14, for example, not only revolutionized furniture design but also helped establish European coffee house culture. And the best part? Its creator wasn't a designer in the traditional sense, but a visionary cabinetmaker who combined functionality and elegance in a unique way.
