Retro from the Future

Don't you agree that summer evenings can sometimes have a very special, contemplative atmosphere? The sun sets late, the air is still warm, and it's easy to lose yourself staring into the night sky. Sometimes you discover a constellation or perhaps a shooting star, and for a brief moment, you wonder what else might be possible out there.

This very fascination with the sky, space travel, and the future also shaped an entire design era, which we'd like to tell you a little about today. The so-called Space-Age style is currently experiencing a small renaissance. Or to put it another way: yesterday's future is making a comeback.

If the term doesn't ring a bell: Space Age refers to the "Space Travel Era." It describes an interior design style that emerged primarily in the 1960s and 1970s. It was a time of optimism and new beginnings: humanity was conquering space, new technologies were being developed, and suddenly almost anything seemed possible.

The enthusiasm for space travel shaped the zeitgeist of the time, influencing architecture, product design, and interior design alike. With each new mission, the future moved a step closer. Designers worldwide asked themselves an exciting question: What could living in the future look like?

The answer was bold, experimental, and interestingly, mostly quite round. Because the Space-Age style is primarily known for its curved, organic forms. This is particularly fascinating when you consider that today's "future designs" often appear more angular and technical – think of the Cybertruck, modern architecture, or high-performance technology. Much of it seems more linear, edgy, minimalist, and almost somehow cold.

The future of the 1960s, however, looked different. It was soft, playful, often colorful, and everything felt almost a little friendlier. This is also due to the materials: plastic, fiberglass, chrome, and aluminum were considered the materials of the future. They made the typical rounded shapes possible in the first place.

Many designs combined shiny surfaces like chrome or plastic with bold colors like orange, red, or white. Typical examples included deep lounge chairs with curved backrests, round side tables, sideboards with rounded corners, or lamps with spherical shades. Instead of rectangular boxes, flowing lines were emphasized. Instead of conveying heaviness, the aim was to convey lightness.

At Revive, the Space-Age style fascinates us not only because of its iconic forms. It also reminds us how closely innovation, future thinking, and the idea of reuse are connected. And this story is even embedded in our logo.

A key moment of this era was 1968. With the launch of Apollo 8, something world-changing happened: For the first time, humans flew so far into space that they could observe Earth from a distance. The famous view of our planet changed the perspective of many people. Earth suddenly appeared small, unique, and worth protecting. The Apollo missions were later followed by the Space Shuttle. It was an important step towards reusable space travel: parts of the system could be used multiple times for the first time, making space flights more efficient and cost-effective in the long run.
