Wassily Chair | A legend in stock

How does a design classic come about? Sometimes through a simple observation—or a coincidence. This is the case with the legendary Wassily Chair , which we currently have back in stock! In 1925, the young Bauhaus master Marcel Breuer bought himself a bicycle. He later remarked:

I was talking to an architect about how the bicycle seemed like a perfect invention—after all, it has barely changed in the last thirty years. He replied, "Have you ever seen how these parts are made? You'd be interested to know—they bend the steel tubes like macaroni!" This idea stuck in my mind, and so I began to think about steel tubes that could be formed into frames.

The result? A radical break with the bulky upholstered furniture of its time. Instead of solid wooden frames: floating lines, clear geometry, lightness. A straightforward piece of furniture that uniquely embodies the spirit of modernism .

As early as the late 1920s, Thonet recognized the chair's potential and began mass-producing it under the name Thonet B3 Club Chair . A folding version was even produced. Today, originals from this period fetch astronomical prices, underscoring the design's legendary status.

To this day, the rumor persists that the chair was designed specifically for the famous painter Wassily Kandinsky . That's not entirely true—but the truth is almost better: Kandinsky was so enthusiastic about Breuer's design that he made him a copy for his apartment. Decades later, the Italian manufacturer Dino Gavina cleverly seized on this anecdote and named the chair the "Wassily Chair." The name stuck—and with it, the icon.

In the 1960s, Bauhaus design experienced a renaissance. Dino Gavina, dedicated to reviving modern classics, put the now-called Wassily Chair into production. He made slight adjustments, however: Instead of the original fabric covering, leather was used, which gave the design even more depth.

In 1968, Knoll International finally acquired the rights and has ensured that the classic continues to live on ever since: Proven for 100 years – and still a synonym for pure elegance today.
