Chesterfield in focus!

There are some pieces of furniture whose silhouette is instantly recognizable, even in the dark. Chesterfield is definitely one of them!

This is primarily due to the equally high armrests and backrests and the deep buttoned tufting – a technical term from the furniture world that refers to the traditional button stitching, in which the cover is pulled deep into the upholstery in a grid pattern. This creates the typical Chesterfield pattern : a sofa design that has stood for style and quality since the 18th century – and for the art of combining comfort and character in one form.

Revive is particularly closely associated with the Chesterfield pattern: Our story began over ten years ago with the resale of a Chesterfield sofa! I recently spoke with the two founders, Paul and Jonas, about their respective perspectives on Revive's history .

We are therefore all the more pleased to now dedicate a separate category in our product range to this iconic design!

Chesterfield design sofa with characteristic tufting
Guaranteed to be an eye-catcher: the Chesterfield design

Chesterfield, by the way, is not a brand name, but the name of a style : originally made in England, with the aforementioned characteristic, deeply buttoned tufting . Two- and three-seater sofas and armchairs are typical of the style. And as if there wasn't enough confusion, in early 20th-century England, "Chesterfield" even referred to a sofa in general. Since around 1930, high-quality fabric versions have been available alongside leather. Nevertheless, leather remains the most commonly used Chesterfield material.

The 4th Earl of Chesterfield , Philip Dormer Stanhope, is often credited as the inventor of this iconic design. Around 1770, he is said to have commissioned the architect and furniture designer Robert Adam to design a sofa that would allow for both upright seating and exceptional comfort – the birth of this classic. To this day, every good Chesterfield model embodies this unique combination of posture and relaxation.

The production of a Chesterfield model follows a clear structure: a sturdy wooden frame, spring-loaded seat cushions, careful upholstery, and then the covering and tufting. Deep button stitching permanently secures the upholstery – this is why good pieces age gracefully, and patina is part of their beauty!

And what does that mean specifically at Revive? We check every piece for proportions, the depth of the quilting, the quality of the materials , and clean edges. In our own sewing and finishing department, we carefully update the substance and comfort while preserving the original character. If you'd like, we can show you your favorite model in detail via video ; or you can come to our showroom to try it out.

Chesterfield models are in high demand, and our inventory is naturally limited. If a piece appeals to you, it's best to snap it up right away! It's also worth checking out the Chesterfield category regularly, as well as checking out all the new arrivals .
